Crocheted Mittens
Hedvig’s Crocheted Mittens
Anyone can crochet and knit. Thirteen-year-old Hedvig is an avid creator of amigurumi. (Amigurumi is the art of crocheting small, crazy figures of Japanese origin.) She made these simple mittens, doubling the yarn to make them extra warm and comfy.
• Size: Adult
• Yarn: Klippans 2-ply woolen yarn, about 1600 yd/lb (3000 m/kg), in two colors
• Crochet hook: 5/F
• Amount: About 3½ oz (100 g) of the main color (color 2), remnants for the rest (color 1)
• Skill level: Easy
Color 1 is used for the first 2 rounds and the last 2 rounds, color 2 is used for the rest.
Cast on 42 chain stitches doubling the yarn and using color 1.
Crochet single crochets into every chain stitch. Cut the yarn 6 inches (15 cm) from the last single crochet and make into a “ring,” securing the thread neatly and change to color 2. Continue crocheting into the rear loop using single crochets and color 2 until the mitten measures about 4 inches (10 cm). Make a hole for the thumb.
Crochet 8 chain stitches. Skip 8 single crochets, as this is the space for the thumb. Continue to make single crochets from the 9th stitch (after the skipped stitches) for the remainder of the round. Then crochet single crochets into the chain stitches (8 stitches). You have now created a hole where you will crochet the thumb. Continue to make single crochets for another 5½ inches (14 cm) making the mitten 10 inches (24 cm) when it’s time for the last rounds.
Finishing off: Round 1: Bind off 4 stitches, distributed evenly. You bind off 1 stitch by skipping a stitch.
Round 2: Crochet one round without binding off.
Every second round is crocheted as round 1 and every second as round 2.
After 8 rounds: Cut the yarn 6 inches (15 cm) from the single crochet, change to color 1 and crochet as round 2. Round 9 is the last round and is the same as round 2. Cut the yarn as before (6 inches [15 cm]).
Remember you need both a right and a left mitten. Secure all the threads.
Thumb: Crochet single crochets with color 2 in all the stitches in the thumb hole (16 stitches in total). Crochet single crochets until the thumb measures 2 inches (5 cm).
Tip of the thumb: Round 1: Decrease 4 stitches evenly spaced.
Round 2: Crochet a row without binding off.
Round 3: Same as round 1.
Round 4: Same as round 1 and this is the last round. Cut the yarn and sew together the tip of the thumb.
Sew together the straight top edge of the mitten so that the thumb hole is at the right spot for the mittens.
